A Room for Every Day

A Room for Every Day

little boy after heart surgery.

In August 2023, Rachel and Mike Hoffman learned that their unborn son had a serious congenital heart defect. Diagnosed with a ventricular septal defect (VSD), a hole in his heart, the Hoffmans were referred to Cleveland for specialized care.

That same day, they were introduced to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northeast Ohio.

“We really didn’t know anything about RMHC,” Rachel shared. “We had heard of it, but we don’t have anything like it where we live. All the doctors and nurses told us how incredible it was, and that night, we had a room.”

That room became so much more than a place to sleep. It meant warm meals, shuttle rides, kind check-ins, and a community that surrounded them with comfort during an uncertain time.

Landon was born on January 2, 2024. Just three days later, he underwent his first heart surgery. During those fragile weeks, the Hoffmans stayed together because of the Ronald McDonald House.

“From the minute we walked in the door, it just felt like family,” Rachel said. “We didn’t know how long we’d be there, but they gave us a home. RMHC was our light. It made everything feel like it would be okay.”

From daily hot meals to volunteers who remembered their names, the Hoffmans found more than shelter—they found community.

In May, at just four months old, Landon underwent his second surgery. On July 26, the Hoffmans finally headed home, grateful, hopeful, and forever changed. Today, Landon is thriving.

Rachel’s words reflect the heart of RMHC NEO:
“There is a space for every stage. Whatever you may be feeling, there is a spot at the House. That’s what we’re so incredibly grateful for. There’s a room for everybody, whether you’ve had a good day, a bad day, or just a day.”
