16 Mar The Moment the Mission Became Personal

Meredith Danko returned home to Cleveland from Chicago after leaving a career in banking, searching for something more; connection, purpose, and a way to make a meaningful impact in her community. After a conversation with family friend and RMHC NEO Board Chair Steve Harris, she was introduced to the Emerging Leaders, a group that would quickly become a defining part of her journey.
In 2015, not long after joining, Meredith stepped naturally into leadership. She helped drive early momentum for the group, serving on fundraising committees that organized happy hours, Super Bowl Squares, and community networking events. Later, she helped launch a golf outing that gained traction through the strong, connected community she helped build.

Her leadership and dedication led her to serve as Chair of Emerging Leaders, a role that also included a seat on the Cleveland Board of Trustees. In that capacity, she elevated the visibility of the group’s work while contributing to broader organizational conversations, including the lead-up to the 2020 merger.
Then, in 2024, the mission Meredith had supported for years became profoundly personal. She welcomed her second daughter, Chandler, who was born with serious medical complications. Just four weeks later, Chandler contracted a respiratory virus and was admitted to Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital. Two weeks after that, Meredith faced every parent’s worst fear, watching her infant undergo open heart surgery.
For eight weeks, Meredith and her husband lived at the hospital—walking a path they had spent years helping other families navigate. Though they lived nearby, leaving their daughter’s side was not an option.
During that time, the Ronald McDonald Family Room became more than a convenience, it became a lifeline. It was where they found moments to breathe, to regroup, and to gather the strength needed to return to Chandler’s bedside. A hot shower, a cup of coffee, a warm meal, clean clothes; simple comforts that, in the midst of fear and exhaustion, meant everything. Because of these resources, they were able to stay exactly where they needed to be, close to their daughter.

At the same time, they were balancing constant medical updates while caring for their older daughter and trying to hold their family together through uncertainty. In those weeks, Meredith experienced the mission not as a volunteer or leader, but as a parent.
Today, Meredith serves as the Chair of the Cleveland Trustees, and continues to support the mission with a perspective few can fully understand knowing firsthand how vital these moments of care, comfort, and community are for families navigating challenging times. Her daughter, Chandler, who is now nicknamed “bean” is a happy little girl who is quickly catching up on her developmental milestones.
Over the years, Meredith’s journey has become deeply intertwined with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northeast Ohio. What began as a young professional’s search for purpose grew into leadership, and ultimately into a lived experience of the mission itself. In every chapter of her life, RMHC NEO has been there just as she has shown up with unwavering commitment, heart, and leadership.
